It's Happened.... YAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!
« on: February 10, 2009, 20:23 »
Hi all... well, it's finally happened.... one of my girls laid her first egg today  :) :) :)
I'm not sure which one of my girls it has come from, though it's probably the one with a sore bum  :tongue2:
Strange thing is though, why would she lay it on the floor and not in a nest box??

Congratulations Andy!!! So exciting your first egg isn't it???  As to why they sometimes lay on the floor and not the nest boxes I don't know.  more of our eggs are laid on the floor than in the nest boxes, but some of the newer girls are getting the hint!

Congratulations. Just to ask are you using a different material on the floor to the nesting box?

feels good dont it , i had my first egg laided on the journey home from the rescue home.

and i have a smaller shed in my run that i was using for the sick girls well now my girls love it for laying in , the big shed doesnt get touched at all . in the small shed is some horse feed bags filled with fresh straw an they must knock them over daily well today they went inside  the bag an laided 5 eggs ,lmao.

Don't be shy there will be plenty more, crack it open and have the best poached egg ever...

As for the laying, try using something else on the floor in the house eg saw shavings. When I have used too much straw in the house they have laid on the floor. I have straw in the nesting boxes, guess they can smell the difference or they get confused or something.

Some do take a while to get used to laying. One thing you could try is putting a hard boiled egg in the nesting box. Someone else brought a toy egg, it worked for them.

How exciting!! You never get over the thrill, or I haven't anyway...

Our very first egg was outside in the run in broad daylight.  Since then almost all have been in the nest boxes, apart from when one got into the habit of laying first thing in the morning from the comfort of their perch
