I've picked some wild elderberries to make elderberry syrup. I'm new to all this and I'm literally copying a recipe off YouTube but after being told that there are some berries that look like elderberries but they are actually deadly poisonous I'm a little worried now as I'm not 100% sure I've picked the right ones. I've uploaded a pic of the ones I've picked. I'd like someone with a trained eye to confirm them as being elderberries or not for me.

That's good to know. I have no gardening knowledge whatsoever and I avoid gardens as much as possible because they attract insects and I just hate the things with a passion! I'm not really a naturist type but I'm trying to be more 'natural' and elderberry syrup does seem to have some good uses.

You got it right. Do be sure to take off as much of the branchy stems as possible as well.

I know quite a few people who swear by elderberry syrup to fight flu and such, and I made a batch this year. A friend as a huge wild patch of elderberries that she lets friends pick. I went back for a 2nd picking and dehydrated the berries so I could keep making more through the season as needed. Most recipes on the internet call for dried berries (double it for fresh berries).

These are definitely Elderberries and look great for someone new you have done very well    I have never done syrup myself.  I am trying wine with mine for the first time this year so good luck to us both and if it works maybe we swap recipes xxx

It should be just fine in about three or four months, Aled

Cheers sunshineband, could not find any sloes but there were loads of Elderberries.
