hi!
i sowed carrots sometimes in april and nothing came out...well two seedlings by now!!! i put some more in a month later, at the different place and still nothing happend. i had no problem growing the same kind of carrots last year...any advice???

I think you will find that a lot of people are having problems with a lot of crops this year including carrots.  The low temps and constant rain is taking its toll.

Fingers crossed for a late summer.

No, not at all, keep going and hope for a break in the weather.

I haven't got loads of carrots, but when my OH dug out a hole ready to put a load of old hardcore in, then he's going to build a bigger patio, the soil underneath was sandy, so I put some behind where we'd moved the greenhouse to and mixed it in with the existing soil.

I sowed just over half of it with carrots, then covered it all in fleece.  That was in the nice March weather.  Well I didn't think anything was going to grow, but in late May, they started to germinate, so I sowed the rest of the area and kept the fleece on.  I didn't water anything, they just had the rain water, which was slightly deflected by the fleece.

They are now up, although there is a lot more top growth due to the amount of rain, but they are coming along nicely.

I didn't think they would germinate at all, but I just left them to do their own thing.  Hope some of yours come through soon.

I think that will be down to timeing, IE there was a warm spell after sowing and the seeds germinated in the "just high enough temp".

My two varieties of carrot took even longer to germinate than the parsnips, which is a surprising but unwelcome achievement! 

One thing to beware of is slugs and/or snails - they can eat them before you even see them (particularly if partially hidden under fleece or enviromesh.)

I'm just about to put in my carrots for harvesting over winter. I grow them in boxes covered in fleece cloches. The cloches help to keep the rain from battering the new seedlings, they keep the carrot fly at bay and also help to regulate temps (shade from the sun and warmth when it's cold). A few blue pellets of death also help to keep the slugs down.

Keep trying with the carrots, it took me a few year to get it right but the taste is well worth the effort, there really is nothing like home-grown carrots

last year i had plenty of good carrots,this year sown three different times not one germinated same with parsnips.
