germinating parsnips?
« on: March 14, 2010, 20:36 »
Hi

On the Jeremy Vine show the other day the guy in Wales was germinating Parsnip seeds between kitchen roll or something...

Can anyone elucidate?  Is it water, seeds and kitchen roll into the airing cupboard sealed in plastic bags?

Some guidance would be appreciated as the last few years my parsnip seeds sown into the ground have been poor to say the least.

TIA

Nick

Tried it - didn't work >:(

The following year, I just plunked them in the ground - I only put in a few seeds to see if they worked (basically, I'm hopeless at growing carrots, so I thought parsnips wouldn't work either), anyway, hey presto, they came up, and I got some of the biggest parnsips ever :D.  I was fully expecting them to be like the ones you get in the supermarkets.  One or two were like those - perfect - but some of the others were really funny ones.

m first try with parsnips last year was a complete success.

firstly, they were in too chady a spot, secondly, i thought they hadn't germinated so i put potatoes in there.
thirdly, about 6 had germinated so they were ruined.

i got 2 parsnips: one was about 3mm wide by 4cm long and the second was a whopper at 1cm wide by 10 cms long.  i didn't eat them though.

 :tongue2:
