Now I have had my plot for almost 2 years and I know the soil and light etc better I am moving some bits round and altering the bed lay out a bit.

I have one strip of the plot that is quite shady and doesn't get the sun until midday/1.00 ish and I am trying to work out what will grow best there. The strip is about 2-3m wide and about 8m long so quite a big area. Would spuds do ok there (my preferred option for next year but worried about blight ) or would I be better off with the brassica family?

It is very sheltered as well

I have my beans and peas in a strip like that in my garden - and they do just fine

I got a bumper crop of spuds in a bed that is shaded from 3pmish onwards. Beans, like Mum's, do well there too, but I've had a measly crop of courgettes.

Thanks for that. It is too big a chunk to just grow beans but I might take a gamble with spuds then...

Would it be ok for beets and broccoli? Or fruit like blackcurrants and gooseberries? My Mum has bushes in a garden that is in complete shade from 4pm in summer. Slower to ripen, but still very good crops.

There are gooseberries and blackcurrants there now and although the currants are ok, the gooseberries are sulking a bit (but cropping) so I thought I would move them to full sun...

Then again, after reading some more it seems these bushes should be ok where they are and if is probably because if the very wet spring they are sulking a bit so I am tempted to leave them for another year to see what happens....

I like to plant brassicas like broccoli in part shade as they don't go over as quickly.

I have also got good potato crops from growing in quite a shaded garden, with only about 4 to 5 hours direct sunshine.
