Title: Strange "problem". Oversized veg
Post by: AlaninCarlisle on August 17, 2014, 11:36
I don't know if anyone else has this problem. It's maybe a combination of the good summer, good well-manured soil and plenty of Growmore but all my various types of beetroot are growing to almost football size. This particularly applies to the Chiogga and various white and yellow ones including Alba.

To some people this may sound like good news but we are frankly over-faced by them and I miss the old days when they rarely grew beyond tennis-ball size meaning that it was one beet per meal

You just gotta pick earlier and sow less, more often.

I just sowed/planted the same amount as in the past. They used to bolt and go woody long before they reached this size

I had the same problem last year.i should have harvested and stored them before they got that big but I thought they would just sit there instead of continuing to grow and grow.

Yes my chioggia are bigger than ever before, and I'm usually standing over them waiting for them to reach golfball size  :nowink:

The biggest one made lush beetroot crisps :)

Mine are large too and I'm inundated! I didn't have enough last year so sowed a few more...
