Frost warning!
« on: May 04, 2020, 10:37 »
Forecast is showing a cold night next Sunday, down to 2 degrees here which usually means a ground frost at the plot. My squash, courgettes and french beans are out under cloches, but may also cover with a bit of moss that came out of the lawn when I scarified it. All further planting out on hold now until next Monday. Good luck everyone.

Metcheck says we are going down to zero tonight  :(  although Metoffice says 5C. I am going to have to keep a beady eye on this. Courgettes and potatos all out after a growth spurt during the warmth of April

Might wait another week to plant out my courgettes and squash as they're looking so healthy that I'd be really dissapointed if I killed them off  :D

It says 4 degrees for here, but usually colder at the plot, so I’ll leave a max/min thermometer up there today and see how cold it gets. My potatoes in pots are almost flowering, so could be a lot of lifting and shifting

Agree about courgettes here...

I'm only growing three (thanks Snows), but they're each going into some sort of chimney, off the ground, as otherwise they just get everywhere! I was going to try a climbing variety, but missed out on the seed:0(

Actually, it's not 'some sort of chimney', it really is one...

Spuds just starting to show now, but nothing else in the high risk category planted outdoors yet.

Possible close call tonight at 5C, but breezy and not a frost pocket where I am - more concerned at the current forecast over the weekend, with 3C forecast (and the potato foliage having no doubt ventured a little further away from safety...)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Potatoes are the only thing at risk for me.   2 is forecast for Tuesday night, according to Accuweather, who I find quite reliable.
I was hoping to begin leaving my tomatoes in the cold greenhouse from this weekend, but a low of 3 is forecast for this coming Sunday and Monday.   So my trips to and from the greenhouse every morning and night look to continue for a while.    It wasn't too bad when the plants were small, but some of them are getting rather large now.

Just remember to dress up warm, and take a torch!

You know you're worth it!

OK I have decided to use tonight as a practice run and have managed to cover all the potato containers and courgettes with fleece! If it doesn't frost at least I now know that I can do it when frost is definitely predicted. I might have to make a few tweeks to the design at the weekend when the potatoes will be that much taller!

Not taking any chances, made a temporary cloche in the polytunnel to cover the aubergines and covered the toms as well.

Any old coverings work here...

The painting sheets in the roof, old netting etc, all get used whenever!

It takes just a few minutes to pop them on, then take them off in the  morning...

It didnt frost here last night but the temperature must have got quite low as next door neighbours courgettes looking a bit sorry for themselves  :(

My set up worked well so fairly confident that I can protect the crop when frost predicted  :D

No frost in the end. Had to rush to remove the covers off the toms though as the sun is out and the tunnel was hot!

Thanks for heads up, we are due for near frost tonight and tomorrow, so my tomatoes and potatoes are neatly tucked away under a cosy blanket of fleece.

Forecast last night was minimum 6 degrees, garden measured at 5 degrees and plot down at 1.5 degrees as it’s in open countryside. Forecast is 2 degrees tonight, so expecting it to go sub zero at the plot, so I covered the potatoes in moss from the lawn and will see how it goes. Still looking cold for the weekend :(
