Good morning - I planted an asparagus bed with 'crowns' 2 years ago - I read on a site "Harvest Asparagus in April" - I can't see any growth at all let alone something to cut - are they OK? (btw I know they should be left alone for 3 years anyway)

If they were OK last year and have not been subjected to prolonged waterlogging they should be OK this year too - been a funny year so far weather-wise (seem to remember someone, New Shoot possibly , reporting first spears appearing a few weeks ago.)

Nothing showing on mine yet, which is not at all unusual here, and given the cold weather forecast this week I'm not expecting them to venture above ground for a while yet (a decent bit of rain would probably help!)

I think it was me, but then they stalled and didn't do anything for a while.  There are spears just showing again now.

I would agree with JayG that it is a combination of weather factors and it is too soon to worry just yet

I have been inspecting my bed daily and nothing had been showing then on Sat one full grown spear appeared as if by magic. Hopefully the rest of the bed will get the message.

No spears showing yet in my mature bed here in Hampshire.
I wouldn’t worry for a few weeks yet

Thanks all that's a relief ie not just me - I left an allotment a few years ago when we moved and it had a 2.5 year old bed - I never had one spear. 5 years on the thought of losing another bed saddens me more than I can say ... good of you to take the time - Roger

I planted a 9ft row using old plants being discarded by another plotholder, I thought i'd shove them in and see what happened... 4 spears so far!
