Roosting Problem or Not ?
« on: August 22, 2008, 20:45 »
I have 4 new girls. On the first night I couldnt believe that all 4 of them managed to get on the roosting bar as I thought it may be too small for the 4 of them. now I have 2 Speckledys and 1 Isa Brown roosting with the remaining Isa in the nest box on her own  :(  Will this be a problem or do they do their own thing ?

Lots of hens prefer to sleep in the nest box.

Balance on a cold hard stick / Snooze in a comfy warm bed.....

.... now let me think

our amber and goldline sleep ontop of each other in a nest box (who gets squashed underneath depends on who gets there first) whilst the others jostle for their favourite spot on the perches. i have tried everything to persuade them otherwise but they just prefer it! at least their not on the floor!!!! being poo'd on!!
thinks her guardian angel`s gone on strike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you though about putting doors/closers on nest boxes?  This does the trick.  Open them in the mornings for obvious reasons.

Mine were regularly piled on top of each other in the nest box so I put a board in front of it now in the afternoon before they settle down for the night, and take it out in the morning.
They still sleep piled on top of each other on the floor........I've given up trying to get them to sleep on the perch   They seem happy enough so I leave them to it.
Life is good
