Vine weevil SOS - please help!
« on: February 28, 2013, 15:28 »
Hi gang! I think I imported these nasty little critters a few years ago in a heuchera from the garden centre.  At the time, I thought 'that's a pretty beetle thingummy' and didn't realise what they were until I wondered why it was failing to thrive and the whole thing came away in my hand, eaten right through... >:(

Since then I've been waging my own personal war against them.

I've just been emptying my dalek and sieving the compost only to find what looked suspiciously like more eggs.  I then inspected my strawberries (two grubs before I gave up), new blueberry (eggs) and I'm afraid to look any further.   :(

I can't nematode until the weather warms up, and while I can use chemicals to water in for my non-edible plants, is there anything I can use on my edibles?  I'm not growing organic and I think I'd rather have some plants than no plants!

Feel like wringing my hands and giving up to be honest!

Mags  :(

I would rather live in a world
where my life is surrounded by mystery
than live in a world so small that my mind could comprehend it...✿~ Harry Emerson Fosdick

Well, Googling mostly brings up nematodes, but I did find this:

http://voices.yahoo.com/control-black-vine-weevils-using-organic-methods-8487117.html

It talks about black vine weevil, but they sound pretty much the same thing to me.

It recommends going out and shaking them out on a night, then killing them in soapy water, which does rather sound like some kind of organic soap based product might do the trick too.

Thanks for that pd!  I'm hoping the adults will have died off now they've done their thing but will go out with a torch tonight for a peek.

Looks like I'll be out tomorrow watering every non-edible space I can find with weevil killer.  I've not been able to find any chemical control for edibles so it looks as though there's nothing I can do until the weather warms up... :(

I've never had any experience of the things, google provided the answers, but you're welcome anyway :D

Though I've no idea if any of that actually works. Still it'll give you some fresh air if nothing else :D
