coffee as Snail/Repellant?
« on: October 15, 2007, 10:11 »
A girlfriend told me that strong cold coffee on the green leafy vegies will deter the slugs snail and munching bugs. My question is

1. does it work and
2. do the vegies absorb the caffeine

I have another girlfriend who gardens with me and she can't have any caffeine due to a heart condition and I didn't want to go nuts watering all the plants to find out they will make her sick.

any help would be much appriecitated. I currently use the egg shell and beer methods

it only lasts as long as the rain lets it ... when ya come to eat the veggies.. wash em and you should be fine .

if ya smell coffee... then ya left some behind ...... typical woman needs a man to tell em to wash up proper

when you water the garden with the coffee it will go into the soil - my question is whether the soil will retain the caffeine and will the plants take up that caffeine?

Spent coffee grounds on the surface of the soil are supposed to work.  I suggested this on another thread but don't recall getting confirmation or otherwise as to whether it worked.  :D

I tried it this year around my rhubarb and it certainly seemed to work, as prior to this the slugs has reduced my rhubarb seedlings to nothing!

To be honest I found it more effective than eggshells, or beer.  The eggshells just resulted in a slimy trail of eggshells going up my cucumber plant, and then leading away from the plant

As for beer, I try not to use it after finding a frog in the beer trap!  :(
On the very steep learning curve of organic veg growing!!!!

Shame about the frog but good news on the coffee grounds.  Get down to Starbucks folks - they give away spent coffee grounds.

As for the beer traps - this keeps frogs out : http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?p=86167#86167
