Hiya all, I was wondering if anyone knows how deep the roots of Clump Forming Bamboo go?
We want to make a screen with it :). Thanks

About a foot to a foot and a half, in a dense layer,  for me (river valley soil, good moisture levels) so possibly deeper in poor/dry soils?

I love bamboo:  my top three plants for a community garden are bamboo, lemons and lemon verbena: easy to harvest, all have 1001 uses and relate across cultures.  Most of mine are P nigra (between running and clumping), with some fairy bamboo (clumping) and something that's supposed to get giant but I'm too cold so it gets skinny instead (clumping).

Thats for that, as long as it doesn't get too deep it should be fine :).

Early spring is the best and recommended time; both my clumps came from small divisions from other plants done at this time.

If you do it now you might get away with it (you are in the "nothing to lose" zone!)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks guys. Would it be better to leave it in the pot until spring and then devide it up and plant out? Would it need to be when there is no danger of frost?

Suggest you do both, split and plant some and also put some in pots as a back up or to swop. I grow the black and the big gold one as screening but also take a lot of canes off for garden use. Just watch your fingers - every bit of bamboo -- leaves, shoots, main stems, little fibre bits, splintesr, ends of canes etc all seem to be designed to cut through flesh.
