Title: How many eggs??
Post by: mummychick on December 30, 2010, 22:18
We have had our 4 chooks for 6 months and we thought that they would stop laying in the winter or lay a lot less.  BUT not our girls!!!!  They are laying the same as they always have about 25 eggs a week.     Is this normal??  We keep waiting for them to stop!

perfectly normal for chickens in their first laying season (some hybrids can keep going for a couple of laying seasons before slowing down)  :)

I have four laying hens and three stopped a couple of months ago.  They were moulting in turns (not a full moult) and since then they haven't laid at all.  The fourth one was laying every two or three days but she has stopped in the last two weeks - she is slowly moulting and also we've had this awful cold weather - once in early December and then recently.  They are approx 18 months old and are all pure breeds.  They started laying for the first time in February 22nd of this year.

My husband has found the perfect way to get our hens to lay. He casually walkes into the field and sidles up to any non laying birds and very very quietly says things like "Chicken Curry, Coq Au Van, Chciken Casserole". Soon we have a bountiful supply of eggs. He always does this just after Christmas, just as the days are staring to get a littl bit longer.....it can't be the light extending must be his comments.
