Title: Can anyone identify these chicks for me please?
Post by: francais on May 01, 2010, 16:58
Hi

I have just adopted two new chicks :) who I am raising in a home made brooder, but I can't remember what type the guy I had them from said they were. He had so many different types & the kids picked these based on their looks

I think he said something about "Dutch" and possibly a silkie, but I could be way off base here. Can anyone tell from these photos please?

Thanks in advance

You'll have to wait and see until they have their feathers before you can hope to tell reliably and also sexing.  Don't know how Nails can sex at this age when even the breed isn't obvious.

They look a bit too big for dutch too. As for legbars, they are well known to look like so many others. The legs are not clear in the first pic, are they the same bright yellow colour?

I'm not sure the top photo is a  legbar though it's similar.  These chicks look to be around 5 days old as they have reasonably developed wing feathers which start to show 3 days old or so.  I attach some photos of some legbars (with the odd VW) and one of a mixed hatch just emerging which I came across so you can all go arrrrhh.
Note the LBs are one day old and 3days old for comparasion.

TeaPots - off to compare leg colour as we speak :)

Hillfooter - he/she does look quite like those in your photos. I have some light sussex chicks who are a day or so younger than these two, but the LS are already bigger than both.

The possible Legbar is the smallest of the lot so was possibly thinking bantam (not sure of Legbars come in a bantam type?)

DH says he has sold me a sparrow  !

No bright yellow legs or beak :( More like flesh coloured if that helps? The one from the bottom photo has the yellow legs though.
