White leaves on leafy veg.
« on: June 22, 2011, 19:10 »
I give up. I have just about had enough of so may things, so called simple that just fail to grow properly. I have sowed rocket time and time again that starts off fresh, healthy only to turn a pale white and wither at the tips. They just never seem to get going. The same with the curly Kale I have bought. The leaves are stating to go white. I don't under or over water and have used B and Q (so called excellent) compost. This

Sounds like a serious soil problem. Before you add more veg, I highly recommend you take a soil sample and send it in for analysis. Something is either lacking or in too high a concentration, and the analysis should help you figure it out.

You never know what was used on the plot before you got it and this way you'll have a better idea.

Your garden is your plot and Trillium's point about sending off a soil sample sounds simple enough to understand to me.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It's nothing to do with my soil. It's happening with stuff in pots. As I said in my first post about it being B and Q compost.

Try this link, it gives a fair bit of info, though you do have to scroll down around various ads to find it.

Basically if you aint got bugs it's the soil. Possibly contamination in the compost - rare but not unknown.

All the best with it.

You didn't say that they were in pots in your initial post, so I assumed it was your soil - wherever you're gardening.

Since its pots, then obviously you've gotten a bad lot of compost from the shop - wherever you bought it.

Often packaged compost itself does not contain enough nutrients to support plants for any length of time. You'd need to feed the soil/mix in the pots  regularly and often with either fertilizer or something like manure or comfrey tea. And water often as pots dry out quickly.

you might also consider what type of water you're using. If it's heavily chlorinated, then that's a problem right there. If it's rainwater, then track back to something that might be in the troughs or butt that's causing problems - maybe a dead creature or something else unpleasant.

but any compost will run out of feed after a few weeks, specially if you've been watering a lot because of drought conditions!

Why not to use mix of your garden soil and compost? Say "half half" and one bag of chicken poo as backup for minerals(add some to water when watering plants)?

So the B and Q highly rated compost could be the culprit ? I have bought a few bags of this all this season so far.

I did wonder if chicken manure pellets would be ok mixed with water, a bit like the olkd days when they put a cow pat in a sack like a giant teabag in water. How much manure to a watering can full of rain water ?

I mainly use rain water but I can't say I haven't watered the odd time tap water (which stinks of chlorine) Perhaps this has upset the plants as they are used to rain.

If you can smell the chlorine, then it will cause problems. To counteract this, fill buckets of tap water and leave for several days for the chlorine to dissipate  and then you can use it to water your plants if you're short of rain water.
