Pea sticks

Is it best to put pea sticks in as you sow peas direct or once the plants have started to show themselves?  I don't want to damage any roots by jabbing things in the soil.

Personally i use string tied around 4ft canes, placed around the outside of the peas.I tie new strings in as the peas grow.

Put them in as you sow the peas

Either will do. I planted half a row in gutters and then sowed the remainder. I then put all my sticks in knowing I wasn't going to do any harm. Protects them from the birds and probably from the mice.

Height depends on variety,  it usually tells you the height on the pkt ???

Excuse for re-post!!!!

Seeds straight in the ground.

Supports in AFTER germination.

Twine strung at higher levels as they grow.

Werks for me!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

There were more on the other plot!

The stakes are about 4' with a bit over 3' showing above ground.

So is there not much weight in the pea plants then?  I was thinking/presuming I'd need longer stakes in order to have 3' above ground, this will be my first attempt at growing peas and was hoping to sow tomorrow.

I managed to drive 3 tree stakes 2 foot into the ground whilst building my still to be completed "Munty" bean frame, twas damn hard work though, and it will be a permanent structure  ;)

You are a gent DD, looking forward to tomorrow even more now, another new chapter in my short allotment history  8)

As long as they're sturdy, that's all that really matters, I like to be able to pull them out & re-use next year, without the aid of a JCB.

On the subject of re using, I use pre-treated rough cut wood from the DIY store, being rough cut it's cheap and being treated it won't rot in it's first year.
