Do I need brassicas?
« on: January 01, 2012, 18:28 »
I'm trying to get my head around crop rotations so that I can decide what to put where.  All that I've read talks about the need for keeping brassicas & potatoes apart because of the lime thing.  But what I want to know is - do I need to grow brassicas at all?

I wouldn't mind trying some cavolo nero, but otherwise I'm not really that fussed about them - I'd prefer to concentrate on salad leaves, legumes, chards, tomatoes & soft fruit, and Husband wants to grow potatoes.  But if I need them for some soil benefit, I'll have to try to fit some in I suppose.

You don't need brassicas for crop rotation.  The rotation plan just slots them into the cycle at the time the soil conditions suit them best and most crops other than them prefer slightly acidic soil anyway.

Soft fruit is a good choice.  So expensive to buy and so easy to grow.  Put Autumn Bliss raspberries on your list - they are fab  8)

For years I grew no brassicas - as others say, grow what you want to grow, and fit the rotation in around that.  You will find several versions of what sequence to follow for rotational purposes - which takes the pressure off a bit because if the experts can't agree, it can't be all that vitally vital to get it in one particular sequence!

No, I do not think, it's that vital in the home garden, where everything gets jammed in a small space anyway, but does help not to grow the same crop in the same place.

Anyhow, @ Katie: I am shocked. Someone, who does not want to grow brassica. Be happy. All the trouble is with them in the home garden. And every other thing, one wants to eat is one.

What's so great about Gurgle images, is that you can copy a word or two, then see what the result is straight away!

That 'cavolo nero' looks fantastic!

Ask Mrs Growster before buying please...;0)
