Green Chillies
« on: November 23, 2013, 13:18 »
For me it has been a disastrous year for growing chillies. Two turned red and that was it! I've still got seven green chillies still on the plant. Do I pick and dry (can I dry?) or leave and hope they eventually turn red? Thanks.

Where is the plant? If it's in an unheated greenhouse you're lucky it's still alive.

If it's in the warm there's still a good chance they will turn red if the plant looks healthy, but they can be eaten when unripe, although the taste will probably be different from the ripe ones.

I've not tried drying unripe cayennes (the only ones I grow now) but assuming they contain more moisture I'd definitely recommend cutting the very tops off to make sure they don't go mouldy inside.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Our chillis have been on the bedroom windowsill all year and done really well. Lots of fruits on and still producing.

Be patient, some of ours took weeks to ripen.

My two Cherry Bomb chilli plants have been located in an unheated greenhouse. Perhaps that's where I've gone wrong? I've now placed them on the conservatory window sill where it is a bit warmer than the greenhouse. Hopefully, with patience, I'll see the seven eventually turn to a ripe red colour!! Thanks All.

Chilli fruits need more warmth than light to ripen  ;)  Sometimes I just pick the fruits and bring them into a warm room where they'll soon turn red

I thought that some chillies were always destined to be green, and won't necessarily turn red

I still have chillies going in my unheated greenhouse. They'd still got aphids on them the other day, hanging on for grim death  :nowink:

Half of mine are on a sunny, warm windowsill. All the habaneros were green when they went on a few weeks ago and now most are red.

Sunny, I've seen loads of green chillies - would all these be under-ripe.

cut them back hard  I think

I think it might depend very much on the type of chilli - my chenzos died last year from the recommended severe cut back. This year I am cutting back less and more carefully to hopefully have survivors for next year.
