Stubborn jam jar labels!
« on: June 03, 2010, 08:23 »
Anybody got any foolproof ways for removing those really stubborn labels from jars - the ones that won't peel off or the glue won't scrape off?

I've tried soaking them & scraping but still get a sticky patch.  Is there anything to apply which may get rid of the gluey bit?

Thanks

Lakeland sell Sticky Stuff remover, which is said to tackle this problem.  either it doesn't do what it says on the tin, or I'm too impatient (entirely possible!) but I'm not convinced by it.

Any other solutions I'll be glad to read too  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Have you tried using methylated spirits. That normally shifts the glue.

I use the Sticky Stuff remover and it works very well, and you only need a tiny bit.

If you fill the jar with very hot water, without soaking the label, most of them will peel off when the glue softens. Depends on the glue used how long you have to wait. Have fun! :)

Tosca's method of using hot water in the jar to soften the gum works for me - and if there is any sticky gum remaining on the outside afterwards a brief touch with a bit of kitchen roll dampened with Hammerite solvent  or similar takes it off instantly.  (This also works when not using the hot water step, it just takes a bit more rubbing).

I use ethyl acetate for removing anything sticky, I have two large bottles of it lurking in the garage that my brother acquired in his chemistry days.  I'm not sure if you can easily buy it though, nail polish remover is basically the same stuff.

I use sealant remover, a cheap one from screwfix, works for me and smalles of oranges.

I hot soak off what I can and the rest comes off easily with nail polish remover on a cotton ball.

the only way that's always worked for me is to use the rough side of a sponge whilst they're soaking in very hot soapy water.

you have to have taken as much of the label off as possible first.

and you have to scrub.

chemical assistance as already suggested is probably the only non-scrub method!
