New to veg growing
« on: April 30, 2009, 11:27 »
Hi all

I am new to growing veg and so far have got most of my veg which includes toms, beetroot, carrots, runner beans, peas, cucumber growing happily in the greehnouse.
My question is when can I put the runner beans and peas outside as they seem to be getting large. Also do I have to harden them off first. I live in Bolton, near Manchester.

Many thanks
Broadhaven

Hi Broadhaven, It's a nice idea to introduce yourself in the welcome section, and also good to include your location on your profile,so replies can be tailored to suit. That said, I will try to answer your questions.
Both Peas and Beans will need hardening off for a week or so. Putting them out in the daytime at first, and putting them back in at night for a couple of days. Then if frost is not forecast, leave them outside. You can then plant them out, but your runner beans will not stand frost. (I haven't sown mine yet ) So be ready with the fleece! It might be prudent to start another tray off, for planting out mid/end of May. Good luck.

Hi

Thanks for your advise. I think perhaps I have been to eager in getting my seeds growing. I will certaily harden them off and plant some more incase of failure. I also have some cut and grow lettuce growing in the greenhouse. They are growing nicely but seem limp and don't seem crunchy. Am I right in thinking I need to harden these also and then keep them outside.
Thanks

Yes Lettuce wants to be outside in the heat of the summer, but take your time hardening them off.

Hi Broadhaven - it is probably just how the software works to let you know where you are etc (it seems to have a built in statistics)   ;)
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

No you havn't done anything wrong.

You started the topic, therefore the symbol is to tell you that you have contributed to that post.

When you post on other peoples topic, the same sybol will appear. It is to help you find which topics you have been involved in or started.

Welcome  :)

Thanks to all for your input. The weather is dire here at the moment, but rain is very much needed I guess!
