Title: Fishing Season 2018
Post by: Aidy on January 08, 2018, 21:11
Thought I would start a new fishing season thread for this year.

I have no plans as yet for the first session however I have bought a new coat ready. I have given up on gortex for fishing, its great for other areas but it needs to be kept clean to stay waterproof.
I now dress like a hurah henry in me waxed jacket  :D so I reckon it wont be long before I am out again.

I used to love the old wax jackets. The first one I had was a Bob Church one which was at the cheaper end of the market and cost £30 back in 1987. That jacket lasted me 7 hard years, of serious fishing, working on Mam n Dads small holding, air rifle hunting, beating on local shoots, and general outdoor wear (you know pottering round the garden, dog walking etc). Also came on may field trips whilst studying at Plymouth Poly. I was given a Solway Barbour in 1995, did not last as well sadly!
Tight Lines for the forthcoming season, its AGM and ticket renewal time here in West Wales.
Cheers

When manky Barbour jackets became fashionable it was the only time i have been a fashion leader ! :)

Still got a lightweight Gamefair jacket in good order, but it does not get out much because it is still heavy compared to modern stuff.
Beach or boat a waterproof smock is favourite for keeping dry .

typically its not rained  since I bought it to go out and try it  :D

Chatting with me owd mate over crimbo during our blizzard encounter on the rezzy he still sea fish's up here in Blackpool, he was saying the fishing compared to when I was a younger model of myself is thousands of times better and we are now seeing species we rarely saw. I still have all me owd gear so might just have a trip out again or at least show the young lass how to nightline.

Yes I've been tempted to buy some sea fishing gear, my heavy salmon spinning rod will do for some parts of sea fishing but specialist gear would probably help.

These are certainly better than the ones we used to clip on our rod tips, luminous after keeping them under the bedside light as long as we dared before getting told off  :D :D  Snap and they last all night. Even the next night if I put them in the freezer when we get back home  :D

Spent a couple of hours tying some Zug Bugs today, never heard of them and found it by accident, I believe its an old american pattern, similar to a stonefly nymph in looks, mainly consists of peacock feather. It does look like it could be very productive.
Weather looks awful next week so no fishing planned so I think I will start tying the nymphs ready for spring.

Not fishing in the true sense but had a stroll on the local beach at low yesterday to pick up lost tackle and line .
Got half a dozen leads and attatched lines but also a nice bonus of 7 big scallops !

They will soon be fried in garlic butter and nestled in a freshly baked baguette !
Food does not get much better !

Will have another stroll today, might even try for a lobster ! :)

No lobsters in the pot , three small crabs and a whelk !
Did up the Scallop score to 16 which is more than i have found total  in the past four years !

Was going to fish the tide down before recovering the pot but glad i did not as cold and drizzly!
Getting soft in my old age !

So last thing last night and me mate phones and twists me arm so we ended up at Bank House at Caton, Lancaster. Pretty cold to start so thought Cats Whisker and fish a little deep until my mate caught first cast and red n black buzzer! Quick change to Hares Ear nymphs and almost straight away a bite but couldnt hook it, a few hours later and 5 missed knocks I finaly hook into a nice 3lb Rainbow, with just hour to go hooked and landed 2 more around the 1.10lbs mark, not a bad day in the end.

Haven't ventured out yet, only thought about it.

Might think about a day on the Tay but not yet, too cold! New 11'3" grilse rod for Christmas, won't be seeing any action on the Tay in spring though  :D!

Work party scheduled for one of my more local rivers later this month, always a good day out, someone usually falls in or drops a chainsaw in the water......

So as I mentioned we (my mate) and I was fishing on Monday up at Bank House. As we were setting up he mentioned he had bought a new reel  ??? (he has so many reels its untrue! Reel fetish).

So why you bought a new reel I ask, well he said it cost next to nowt and it is brillient was the reply. He showed me the bearings etc, feel how smooth the drag is and he went on and on and all for £18  I was pretty shocked, as it happend it was from a company called Maxcatch, as it also happened I have few bits from them and have performed very well for the low cost, so I have now bought 2 of these reels to replace my dated ones, gotta say I have been impressed with them, had my daughter pretendng to be a big rainbow in the garden and the drag was awsome, so smooth and very controllable, easy to switch from left hand to right hand and sits in the rod perfectly, nicely balanced too.

Right then now to plan the test fishing trip  ;)

I have had three matches so far this year on the Ouse below York. Its not been good fishing so far, 2 blanks and last match 5oz which was good enough for 5th place (had a small roach in less than a minute, if only the match only lasted 60 seconds!) Conditions haven't been great with snow water in the river, plus a lot of salt being washed in from the roads. It will hopefully pick up for the last 2 matches of the winter league, despite the 2 blanks i am still in 6th place overall with every chance of catching up on 1st place with 2 good results. Am already looking forward to the spring and getting out for a bit of fly fishing and some overnight sessions after carp.

Coarse winter league matches are like banging you head against a brick wall, nice when you stop !
Did it for years and it was hard work for not a lot of fish !
Would i do it again ?
Hell no ! :)

Took the local Urdd group fishing to a local lake last week. 12 youngsters all caught trout, but what was best was the way the adults came up to us and told us how much their children had enjoyed themselves. Many of the trout were eaten that same evening.

We was footy trianing the other night here in Lytham with our girls footy team, unfortunately due to some uninvited travellers who camped on our private footy ground and left both human and dog deposits we were unable to train on there so we went across the the road onto Lytham green which was a little different to say the least.
I spent sometime looking down at the Ribble as it was low tide, there used to always be people fishing it but no one was there and yet it looked so peacefull, I have texted a mate who still fishes off the coast to see if the flounder and eels still reside there and might just have an evening or two on it once I have dusted off the old sea gear.

Hi all, just poking my head above the water, really to ask Aidy how he's getting on with his tennis elbow. It has put me out of action for nearly 3 years, at first I couldn't pick up a mug of tea.

I found that this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Medipaq%C2%AE-Tennis-Golfers-Epicondylitis-Support/dp/B00AKSFWZU/ref=sr_1_4_a_it/262-3903295-9062018?ie=UTF8&qid=1532701060&sr=8-4&keywords=tennis+elbow+clasp helped with day to day tasks.

I did mine (3rd time) overdoing it SWFF at Church Norton. It seems to get worse each time & I'm now very wary of casting a fly which is a bit of a bu**a because I had only just taken up SWFF as an alternative to ponds & lakes....too easy.

Aled, I've fished your area a few times, Tywi a couple of times, blanked. Every year for about 15 years a group of 4 mates would stay in a caravan at The Cross Inn Llandeusant, we fished all the reservoirs in the area but mainly the Usk. This was from the early 80s until the landlord moved to Scotland in 2000

I expect it has changed vastly since then when it was pretty much just local farmers who used the pub, it took a few years for us to be accepted, but we were eventually & we had some great times in that pub & the area. Happy days!

HI Br
I know the area very well, and will always have a soft spot for the Usk Reservoir as it was where I caught my first ever fish in 1980 a 13ozs rainbow trout on a ledgered worm.
Interesting looking elbow support. I had quite a bad bit of tennis elbow back in 2015, but seems to be better now. As I've mentioned before I seem to be prone to inflamed tendons but since discovering glucosamine cream it seems a lot better.

You might try the clasp, I did find it useful just to have on, day to day, although my pain was pretty constant. I knew if I'd forgotten to put it on.
Aled, the 80s on the Usk, I wonder if we might have seen each other? It's where my mate taught me to fly fish.
Do you remember "Ken The dam" as he was known, the bailif.
We would often fish from the slip or right round the other side as far as we could drive.....I've got many tales I could tell :D :D

Was in two minds this morning as the wind had increased gusts upto 30mph but decided to go.
Hard work was an understatement, first battling the wind but also the catch reports was showing not a lot being caught.
Several hours in and trying all sorts and nothing.
Had dinner and a rethink and while looking out noticed one chap fighting one, popped down to see what he was using and he said a PTN with a green thorax so changed flies, Sulpher Nymph on tip and a PTN with green thorax about a foot up.
3 rainbows in a 15 min period! lost one then it quiet, then another landed.
Time to go home only I had a little accident and managed to lock the car keys in the car  had to wait for breakdown man to let me back in.

Having sorted out the Storm Ali damage, I managed a day on the river yesterday and doubled the season's catch with two slightly coloured hen fish at 7lb and 4lb, both returned. Definitely a challenging season up here, still waiting to get a cock fish to smoke for Christmas, looks likely to be a rainbow now!

Have fished about the same hours as last year, but only 1/3 of the result.....still the allotment has been bountiful this year.

Forecast was for 30mph winds so mate n I decided a trip up north to Bank House was in order as it sheltered by trees that surround it.
Checked the catch report and thought mmm not a lot being caught at mo but what was being caught tended to be on either buzzed or nymphs so I decided on the faithful PTN on the tip and the Sulphur nymph on the dropped.
Hours in and not a sniff! Swapped around with different flies, not it was hard work but then back on the PTN and Sulphur then bang, 2lb rainbow on the bank, Sulphur doing the box again.
Alas that was it, 5 hours 1 fish. Still better than working!

Over the IOW for my annual fishing fix... had some good fish this year off Yaverland beach... Dover Sole, largish pout, all within size, and undersize: Black Bream, Silver Eel and many Bass. Mind you, you're not allowed to keep Bass of any size now, as an angler

Then off Yarmouth Pier: Starry Hounds and Smooth Hounds, and Pollack within size, some undersized, plus some bass and a huge Undulate Ray (12-15lb by length measure) She went back too as endangered species. In fact, we never even pulled her onto the pier to save her being damaged: a fellow angler nips over the end gate and down the steps to the water to handline her in onto the bottom step and as she was neatly hook-lipped, was able to flick it out with long forceps. Boy was she strong!! Mostly all caught on squid, whole one for the ray... noticed some bait changes from other anglers at that point lol
Tides are better now for daytime fishing so off to the far end of Yaverland today, and maybe Sandown Pier in the day tomorrowLoved the moonrises this week... awesome

Sounds like a good trip,  the Undulates seem to be doing well off the south coast due to catch and release.
I think a few  Undies on Chesil will be given names like the Carp anglers do as they have been caught that many times ! :)
I believe the Bass ban has been lifted as of today (but have not seen a public notice) and the one fish per day limit is back .
Good news for the fish eating angler !
All we have to do know is land one ! :)

Forcast for yesterday (monday 15th) was overcast and little wind, hurrrahhh
Flask and butty made of I go to Barnsfold.
Arrived for 8am  to what looked like perfect conditions, set up floating line with a sink tip and a PTN on the tip and Sulphur nymph on the dropper.
3hours later and nothing  :( no one else had a bite either! Time for a brew and re-think, decided to loose the nympth's and try the ever faithful cats whisker, orange was the colour last year so thought lets try it now, firstcast and spals of the fly then line ripped off the reel, must of put it bang on its nose, rainbow of 2lbs,
Ended the day with a brace of 2lbers but lost 6

Chattng at the end with Frank the owner and he was saying a lot of people last couple of weeks were saying the same with a lot of lost fish.

Good fishing guys. Season here has ended and I have not fished as much as usual due to dog walking and training. However the next stage is relevant, I'm hoping he'll be a gun dog, and will help me bag some tasty free meat. He's not quite ready for this year, but the training will continue.
Cheers

Still 2 weeks to go in salmon season in my most local river (down the road), all the rest now shut. Unless I pick up another fish in the next 2 weeks, I will end the season with 6, which isn't a bad result given the heatwave and drought until end July.

However, that 5 of these were taken on one of the rivers I fish, and my 'main' river was very poor this year, and we ended the season with about half our average catch on the beat, which is the third poor year in a row....the autumn run seems to have collapsed. Problem seems to be smolt survival at sea and therefore less fish returning.....same as many other rivers. However, the river I got 5 on has had a decent season, with good numbers of fish in it so not all bad news. I kept one fish for smoking for Christmas.

Over to the rainbows now for a couple of months or so......would like a nice one to gravadlax for Christmas/New Year.

I need to go through the fly boxes. I think I will be doing a bit more trout fishing next season, plus I've got a trip to Iceland in July. Time to get tying!

to bring them in to shallow water,,,,

Trout or salmon in Iceland, Aled? That will be one to look forward to!

I lost a fish today on the river and had 4 out of season brownies, all in very good nick, one at nearly 2lb on a 2 inch long copper tube fly!
Also had the embarrassing experience of losing another guy's fish at the net after he asked me to help....bar of silver about 12lb. In my defence, he had no chance of netting it with his trout net, the fish actually jumped towards the net as he was drawing it to it, hit it went half in and fell out again! One of his Rapala hooks was broken too, and the fish had straightened the other one.....it's all C&R anyway at this time so I did say to him he should really count it since it did get in the net, albeit only half of it for a second! Still, bit of a red face, have never done that before and have landed quite a lot in my time.....

Managed to get out today with a trip to Barnsfold.
Hard work again, quick look at the catch report showed not a lot being caught
Took a couple of hours before I hooked the first fish, cast in straight after and hooked another which got away! Another long spell before a change of fly to a pink baby doll and second fish landed.
There was a lot down there today but not a lot being caught.
Finished the day with a first for me....
caught a bream on cats whisker  how bizarre is that?
took a photo coz I still cant believe it.

It is the savior of most fly anglers that the only way a fish can work out if something is edible is to suck it in !
I do recall that in the past large river bream (in Ireland ?) being caught on small spinners intended for game fish !
The red and white of the cats whisker is a bit like a breadflake redworm bait which is a bream favourite !

I caught either a Roach or Rudd of around 12ozs on a Hot Orange lead head a few years ago. Dog is coming along nicely looks like I am in with a chance of him being a gun dog.
