My new potatoes are bland
« on: June 16, 2009, 23:27 »
I am growing Sharpes Express, Ulster Sceptre and Vales Emerald and they all taste bland, last year I grew Ulster Sceptre and they were delicious though this year I have grown them all under black plastic.

Any one know what's going on ?

Maybe they needed more water or were to hot under the plastic would be worth seeing if anyone else has had the same problem... :(

Have you tried leaving them a few days before you eat them? - Contrary to coventional wisdom for new potatoes, but for my taste I much prefer them this way.

Delighted with Lady Christl - grown for first time. Seen other positive comments on this variety
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Potatoes. The quickest and best method is to microwave them in a covered container. Absolutely wonderful for “floury” potatoes but also good for new potatoes, as it concentrates the flavour. Scrub them and remove any blemishes, but do not peel as the vitamins are just under the skin. Cut into large egg-sized pieces and microwave for some 6-8 min or until cooked, depending on the quantity of potatoes, and the rating of the microwave.

Dug first Pentland Javs today. Still a bit small so will leave the rest a couple of weeks. They tasted absolutely fab. :)

Some varieties simply are more bland than others, but rarely something that very liberal doses of old manure won't solve. The flavour is in the manure  ;)
