HAWTHORN HEDGE?
« on: March 12, 2009, 18:59 »
Just finised ,planting 800 of the * around  the perimeter of my plot .Planted as a staggered double row to fill in the gaps in the current hedge .However some of these bareroot whips are 3ft+ tall .Do i leave them as they are ? or prune them down to about 18" to encourage a thicker hedge?. cheers all.

I remember watching Alan Titchmarsh on Gardeners World plant a native hedge using similar sized whips.

Once planted he cut off the top third to encourage thickness.
