Raspberries
« on: February 17, 2012, 07:45 »
I pruned my raspberries when they had finished fruiting last year. I cut out all the old wood and left the new growth. The new canes are now six foot tall, should I prune these back now?
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Only if you don't want a harvest.

These are what you'll be getting this year's fruit on.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh!....good  job I asked, thanks!   I'm having trouble coming to grips with fruit pruning. I have several fruit trees but no idea how to prune them. I look at books and think I've got the idea but my tree looks nothing like the one in the book.
I did think about a pruning course but they are not cheap and I fear I may have forgotten it all by the time I got home.

Have you got training wires, if yes, you can bend the tops along the wire, all in the same direction if you see what i mean ::)

Or, bend each over tall raspberry cane round into a loop and anchor it to its self. :)

Yes they are on wires and they dont have far to go before the reach the cage netting. I don't want them growing out through the netting,  bending the over  would solve the problem......Thanks! :)

yep, thats me

I did a fruit tree pruning course at RHS Rosemoor and i thought i had it sussed until i looked at my trees and was just as indecisive as before.
But the instructor did say that it didn't matter too much what you did, the tree would right its self in time ::)

I've been to Rosemoor, it's nice there and lots to see. I think I shall carry on a  with my method of pruning, even if it's only half right. I do seem to get a reasonable enough crop regardless.
