The general oppinion that the problem with my gooseberry bushes is sawfly, so my next question is, what next ? will the plant die, should I dig it out and burn it or will it be ok next year?

The plant will grow back - but keep an eye out for them next year, and kill them quickly.

Thanks, actually I have seen some new leafs growing on it already
