eating bedding!

I have noticed my chickens pecking around at their wood chipings then swallowing it.  Do any other chickens out there do the same thing?  Will it harm them?

Mine do it quite a lot, especially when you first put the clean bedding in.  They think its food, but they soon get fed up when they realise it doesn't taste of much.

If you are concerned there is a bedding called Medi Bed. It has been treated in some way to be unpalatable.
