one eye shut-infection?
« on: August 21, 2009, 14:08 »
Hi,
we got our ex bats 3-4 weeks ago and noticed one (snuggles)had an eye welded shut - no real swelling but she couldnt open it.
We took her to the vets (who admitted she didnt know a great deal abt chickens) and when she tried to open the eye lid it obviously caused snuggles some pain and the eye was bright red - we both assumed she'd been pecked at some point possibly rupturing her eye.
In the last week however, she has started to open it and although it hasnt opened fully yet she seems to be able to see out of it.  The problem is I am sure the other eye is now slightly puffier than it was - no liquid , no runny nose and no rattling when she breaths although she's the one that has never been accepted into the group and still spends most of her time on her own and is VERY timid around the others running away if they come near her.
Does anyone recognise these symptoms?

Does she perch with the others at night?
If not, wait until it is dark and put her on the perch with the others.  I find
that helps integration into the group.
Also, put up more than one feeder and drinker so the others can't
bully her.

Hope that helps.

You could try bathing her eyes with cold tea on cotton wool, use a different peice for each eye.

Gosh, that brought back a lot of memories.  Excellent treatment and very efficient.  It's also good humans too for cuts, small wounds, puffy eyes.  It's an excellent astringent.
Used to use that remedy years ago.  More efficient than modern medications, cheaper and no side effects either.
