no sprouts
« on: November 25, 2012, 10:50 »
What has happened to my sprouts?

I have grown them successfully for years in ground enriched with well rotted manure and well compacted but this they have not formed, are they another victim of the poor year?

Christmas without sprouts, i am devastated!  :(

Previous 2 years we wee given sprout plants and grew quite successfully, this year bouught our own seeds and a very different story.  When planted out the plants looked healthy but now they're looking a very mixed bunch.  For starters they'ra all really short but I guess that could be the variety we're growing (Roodnerf – Seven Hills)??  Some have big sprouts on them but very few, some have many sprouts on them but are tiny - not much bigger than peas and others have tiny stalks, are the same height but with literally no sprouts whatsoever on them.  Very inconsistent and a bit disappointing.

I enjoyed my sprouts on Sunday, picked on Saturday from my "Trafalgar". Beautiful healthy, reliable, & tasty variety.

I grew 4 different varieties this year and all of them have good sized sprouts - probably one of my best years despite the weather.

My Trafalgar look healthy enough but the sprouts are still not quite big enough for picking. I started them off in April and I suspect that was a bit late. Looks like I'll get a decent crop, but next year I think I'll start them a bit earlier.

My Trafalgar were sown April 24th and transplanted in first week of June. I have been picking mine since 13th October.  I have grown this variety in Scotland, Herts. & Cornwall & found it always reliable.

That's about the same as me then. I planted mine out 1st June. Maybe I needed to feed them more, or maybe they were getting too much shade where I planted them. They've been under netting the whole time so haven't been set back by anything. They've had a couple of feeds of BFB, and I never really expect to have to feed more than that for something planted out in the soil.

I sowed Trafalgar Sprouts on the 23rd April and last Sunday I had my 1st harvest.
They were delicious, really nice. I grow Trafalgar year on year and they are an excellent Sprout.

My secret is to forcefully heel them in at least 3 times in the season.

fatbelly, sorry if I'm being dull here but can you explain what you mean by 'forcefully heel them in'?

You simply keep firming the soil down with the heel of your foot.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
