i am contemplating growing hops next year by which time the chicken run should have been built and i was wondering in an effort to save space if i could grow the hops up the side of the run, but i was wondering if it would do the chickens harm?
-
Spent hops are poisonous to dogs so I think to be safe I'd not mix them with chickens.
-
thank you i think i will find somewhere else to grow them then. Would raspberries be ok to grow along the run? i wouldnt have thought raspberries would be posionous.
-
I should think raspberries would be fine :D

You might not actually get any for yourself of course...

If your girls are like mine, you wont have any raspberries left for you too eat!!
-
You realise your hens will never speak to you if you torture them with raspberries inches from their grasp
You'll need to make sure they can grab the odd one or three :D

Beat me to it V&R :D
...and WCF :D

thats not really a problem as the run is going to be 10m x10m, so i should be able to plant plenty of raspberries for both me and the chickens will probably add sunflowers as well.
is it possible for a chicken to eat too many raspberries or other soft fruit?? can this make them ill? give them the runs or soemthing? they will be running around under a half standard cider apple tree as well so they could potentially get some apple as well.
-
Ohhh yes it can give them the runs. Auntie has photos of what came out one of her girls after to much fruit I will try and find it.
-
Ooo yes... too many grapes

And fallen apples will make them drunk :drunken:

I have a big tub of hops in my garden growing up a trellis and within reach of my ducks and they have never shown the slightest interest in it (didn't know it could be a problem and certainly not going to start worrying about it now  )
-
Hop by products have been known to make me ill.

Oh Kate
It seems as though your ducks are more sensible than Bodger

Not much hope for Bodger then!
