Ashamed to say I'd never in my life eaten mashed swede until today, and it's lovely! I like it much better than mashed spuds, got more taste to it. Next on my list to try is mashed carrots. Any other rooties you can mash?
-
And they are delicious mashed WITH spuds too :D
-
do you mix them 50/50, Auntie? Really is a pity I'm so rubbish at growing swedes. Last year mine were again a complete failure, swedes the size of marbles.
I always feel compelled to add plenty of butter and milk to mashed spuds because they're pretty much tasteless without it. I'd like to swap that for olive oil on the grounds it's healthier, but I don't like the taste very much.

Hi, mashed spuds and carrots, carrots and swede, mashed spud and swede or all together, parsnip also works well with spuds especially if you honey roast them first yum yum :tongue2:you could try sweet potato they are all very nice try experimenting you dont what you've been missing.darren :D

You can mix it in any proportion that suits your taste, Shokkyy.
Just experiment.

mix the pots with greens ie perp spinach or kale with a little onion or leek added. With the spinach squeeze out the water first.
Also j artichokes with pots

How about squash? Would they mash ok or too sweet?
-
they mash really well, I use 1/3 squash to 2/3 potato.
sticking the mashed swede in the oven for 45 minutes makes it incredibly tasty.
-
I like to mash equal quantities of carrot and swede, with a good knob of butter,
or a small amount of chicken Bovril and some crushed thyme
and sometimes I make the mash and top with a stilton and walnut crumble.

I love mashed swede and carrots too. Yumm.
My mum adores mashed spuds and kale.
-
I use swede and carrot mash on my shepherds pie now instead of potato. Not so fattening! ;)
-
My old Mum used to do that, I have not had it for years, I'm growing some swede this year ....Ummmm Swede & Mash here we come
-
My favourite is mashed carrot and parsnip with lots of pepper and a little butter.

I've had my plot for six years, and this last season is the first time I've managed to grow decent swedes. I swore that if I didn't get some good ones this time I'd never bother again. Mine always used to be very, small, or just long and thin without a proper 'round' root. Instead of sowing them direct, I started them off in modules, three seeds to a module, and taking out the weakest two when they'd got their first true leaves. I also sowed them earlier than they should have been, in April instead of June. When they had half a dozen leaves I planted them out, and they grew away quickly. I think the extra growing time certainly helped, and, hey presto!, I've had loads of 'proper' swedes. Maybe it was nothing that I did, and just the weather we had, I don't know, but I'll be doing the same again this year.
-
I start mine off in modules too, but still failed again this year. Actually, not sure what happened to them but the top growth suddenly started disappearing. They were netted too, so don't know what went wrong. Do they need a lot of sunshine or can they cope with a bit of shade?
And by the way - how about mashed turnips? They any good?
-
Yummy swede and carrot mash. Even nicer the next day when I use left overs made into patties, tossed in a little flour and fried on the pan.

Having some mashed today, we didn't grow any last year, but couldn't let January go by without them, they're lovely!
