What to do next for broody
« on: April 06, 2011, 13:17 »
Hi
Betsy's chick is now a week old and doing well  :D
They are in a cage approx 1m x 1.5m in a stable. I started opening it up and letting them wander about the stable where the other hens live but only when the other hens are out free-ranging.
I have noticed that when I go into the stable now Betsy is getting up and wandering around the cage, showing an interest in other things now. It would be possible with a little bit of DIY to fit this cage through the stable door and put them out on grass eventually.
What do I need to do for Betsy and chick now I don't want her to go stir crazy
I have no experience in this so all suggestion much appreciated.  :)

I always let my broodies and chicks out after a couple of days, but not everybody does. The chick will huddle under her if it feels cold and mum will protect it. make sure the chick has had it's crumb before letting it out and then round them back up again after a few hours for it to go back to feed (don't let the other hens get it's feed as it probably is medicated so you wouldn't be able to eat the eggs - unless you are using organic non medicated crumb - and chickens love chick crumb  ::)). The top hens used to give mum a peck just to remind her that they are the boss but nothing serious  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks
I will see what time hubby (extra pair of eyes and hands) gets back and maybe try it later or tomorrow.
Would magpies be a big problem for the chick?

Last year my broody and chicks were outside in a pen within the main pen from day 1.  After 2 weeks they all went out together.  Mum protected the chcks from the other hens if needed :)
