sucker or new raspberry cane?
« on: September 12, 2010, 09:23 »
How do you tell if new growth is a sucker or a new cane? The growth in question is about a foot away from the other canes.

My book says to tie in new canes but to pull out suckers.

Help!

Suckers will grow into new canes if you leave them; it's how the plant propagates itself.

Once reasonably well established you can dig them out, sever the root and replant somewhere else.

If they are anything like mine they will appear up to 8' away from the parent plant, and if left to establish more will appear even further away, which might well be not what you want, in which case you can hoe them off or dig them out, but they will try again sooner or later!  :nowink:

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

They are the new canes.
Let them grow or split and start another patch off.

The only 'sucker' you don't want is from a plant thats grafted and comes from below the graft.
