Raspberry cane help please
« on: December 12, 2009, 13:43 »
My new Raspberry canes arrived while I was on holiday. My kindly neighbour took them into his centrally heated house to await my return 3 weeks later! Is there any purpose planting them out or will they have perished?

Have alook..........are they sprouting or are they just twiggy?

If they are sprouting they are alive. If they are just twigggy scrape a bit of bark back and see if there is any green inside the twigs.

But really the only way to find out is to plant them and wait :) They are pretty indestructable so would have thought they'll be ok :)

Give the roots a really good soaking before you plant them.

Pop them into a bucket of water over night and then plant them, as Mumofstig said "they are pretty indestructable"
(crossed fingers usually helps too) ;)

Soak, plant and wait 3-4 months.
Little other real options.

Soak, plant and wait 3-4 months.
Little other real options.

My neighbour whose favourite saying is: "I was meaning to..." followed closely by, "I was thinking I might..." bought a variety pack of raspberries from a newspaper.... when they arrived he left them in the box in his greenhouse and then "thought about it......" for quite a long time........

Eventually.... he decided he hadn't time to plant them so passed them on to me.

I soaked them for 24 hours then planted them out.... survival rate was about 66% as they looked like very dry twigs...some had started to shoot but died back.  ::)

Scrapping the stem might reveal a bit of green but I'd just soak and plant then wait and see. Can't do much harm.
