Raspberry cane with no life
« on: April 09, 2009, 16:45 »
I planted 4 canes back in feb and 3 are coming through great, however one is as dead as a door knob.  Just read on another thread about taking cuttings-is there anyway I could do something similar with mine?

I could really do with another cane but if not I will just have to wait until next year.

Lucky you, out of my 4 canes, only 1 is showing any signs of life! :(

The live canes will throw out suckers later in the year. This will multiply your stock & you can fill in the gaps with them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Fab-is it then just a case of splitting it from the main cane?

Wait until late autumn. Gently lift the sucker out of the soil with a fork, the roots will come with it. Cut off the sucker & plant it where you want it.

In the meantime, leave the "dead" one where it is......... ignore it a bit (just take the odd sneaky look now and then).. It may decide to play ball a bit later on.  ;)

Either way you've nothing much to lose by leaving it be for now.

Patience...... and if that doesn't work after swearing at it...... dig the B***** up!  ::)

well I'm hoping too...I planted 7 raspeberry canes in November...andthey're not exactly bursting into life.Slight green shoot on 1 but am keeping fingers and everything else crossed for all the others.

Mind you I thought the rhubarb had croaked it(planted last year...in the last two weeks it's come on a treat!

It's taken two years, loads of added compost, regular applications of chicken manure pellets and seaweed to get my raspberry canes looking like decent.

I'd suggest checking that your ones planted in autumn have enough to drink as it has been very dry indeedy in some areas these last couple of months. You could also add some decent compost as a mulch and work in some chicken manure pellets which are slow release fertilisers and maybe something like epsom salts if you think the soil is seriously short of nitrogen.  Like I say - all tricks which have helped mine.

Definitely a slosh of water will help when the soil below the surface is dry.  ;)

I throw mine a handful of chicken-manure pellets if they show a splash of green first.

(I haven't let on to them that I am hoping to take home a few pots of fruit later on)  ::)
