Title: Would you consider 6.50E for a single raspberry cane to be expensive?
Post by: Casey76 on March 01, 2011, 09:02: I'm just amazed when seeing the prices you are quoting in the UK for "bunches" of raspberry canes.

All of my local garden centres seem to carry the same stock, and they are all between 3.50 and 6.50 per cane (each in a 2L pot) depending on variety.

Unfortunately I don't have the space to start a new raspberry bed up, but I would have to think long and hard before buying 10 canes lol!

Post by: DD. on March 01, 2011, 09:13: I hope to thin out my raspberries (Autumn Bliss) soon as they are taking over. I was given about 8 thinnings by a neighbour when I first started on my current plot. They are now a hedge 32' long and 6' wide.

I will no doubt end up with a big pile of roots that I can't even give away as I seem to have saturated the site with them!

Pay anything? Naw!

Post by: JayG on March 01, 2011, 09:20: If raspberries didn't produce such delicious fruit they would almost certainly be regarded as an invasive weed; it is certainly a rip-off for something so easy to propagate! :ohmy:

Slow-growing plants which are comparatively hard to propagate are a different matter; as I've said elsewhere very recently a very cheap blueberry plant is likely to be very small so a relatively high price for a decent sized one is justifiable.

price at a often mentioned UK high street chain store, one cane (not looking so healthy in a fancy box) £3.99.

Post by: Junie on March 01, 2011, 16:13: I have not been able to find bear rooted soft fruit in France either - I ended up getting some small bushes in a set in Jardiland - something like €5 for 4 I think. But there again isn't everything far more expensive in France!!!
Just for information, if you have family coming over to visit you of if you go back to UK, you are allowed to bring in plants, bulbs etc as long as they are in compost and not soil from the garden. My parents brought me a load of bulbs and some penstimoms which have taken well!

This place do some raspberries for about 10-11€ for 5 bushes/canes - maybe worth a look.

If you want to show off and display the Euro currency symbol in a post, hold down the "Alt" key and type 0128 on the numeric pad (with "numlock" illuminated.)

(There are supposed to be other ways of entering it via the keyboard but they don't work for me! )

Don't happen to know the shortcut for the "pound" sign?

(Just don't ask me why there are two choices; I haven't a clue!) ::)

Post by: Junie on March 03, 2011, 12:23: My UK Mac keyboard has a € sign - just alt2. I quite often switch to a french keyboard on screen which it does too if doing a letter or email in french. Annoying when I forget to switch it back though!

Sounds as though everyone has different shortcuts. About time the € was a standard feature on UK keyboards >:(
