aldi have a morello cherry tree for sale but .......
« on: February 17, 2012, 15:57 »
are they a good cherry to grow I know they are pretty nice to eat but would there be any problems with it do I need 2 of them ? or would I be better going to a nursery?
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

well a few years ago i bought a stella cherry from netto, when buying it i thought the same 'it probably wont do anything', but last year it gave me fruit, i think morello is self polinating - for a few quid id give it a go.

I bought one of these last year and got some fruit off it!
They are a sour cooking cherry, not really for eating off the tree.
But yes if you have room, then go for it.
No real reason as far as I am concerned to spend any more money at a nursery.

We bought two morellos form Aldi last year. Planted one at home and one at the allotment.

The one at home died because around the base, the local cats used it as a toilet!

The one at the lotty is growing nicely, it didn't fruit, but maybe this year even if we get just one cherry, it's a start.....

They are very nice to eat raw too, if fully ripe, if you like a tart fruit. They do not need too much of a sunny space and can get rampant, sending off shoots, like a fruitbush.

they do store very well in preserves or somewhat fermented.

I grew this variety before and they're really dead easy once established. They appreciate an annual rotted manure mulch to do well, and soon as you see the berries start to form PUT NETTING ON! Dratted birds will steal even the green unripe ones  >:(

As said, they're a more tart cherry that's better for cooking and baking. You can eat them raw but they do make you pucker a bit, hence the reason they make better cooking cherries that hold their shape nicely. They're also the cherry used for maraschino cherries.

but at that price I wonder what rootstock the trees are on. You could end up with a monster unless it's on a dwarfing rootstock. Does the label give any info on this point?
If you can't be an excellent example be a terrible warning...

You will also need to net the cherry (regardless of whether it is Stella or Morello) once it starts fruiting. I was ok with mine for the first couple of years without netting, but after that the birds had a field day!! No cherries for me that year.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Forgot to answer this part: yes, the morello is self fertile and a good pollinator for any sweet cherry trees you might have.
