Advice please. Is it worth the trouble sowing Chinese cabbage outside at this late juncture (not in the greenhouse, don't have one).

50/50 on that one in my view. 

I have not sown any oriential greens yet, but I tend to grow them under cover in my greenhouse.  They might well be OK for you, but I find my biggest problem sowing late on the plot is keeping the pests off them.  Dark, cool nights and dew means the slugs and snails are out in force and they love crops like this.  If you don't have a lot of slug and snail problems, then I would go for it.

Chinese cabbage are something I'm yet to master because they always seem to go to seed on me I sow the seed as normal as i would any brassicas in a tray in the greenhouse prick them out into pots and then after a couple of weeks they all go to seed what a waste of time and effort will I ever get Chines cabbage I ask myself the way things are going not on your nelly

Adam Frost sowed some rows of Chinese cabbage on Gardeners' World on Friday evening, so it might yet be worth a try.
