« on: February 20, 2013, 20:21 »
Last year decided to try vines on my plot I have prepared three beds all about 12" wide two 6ft long and one 8ft, my question is how many vines will I need, also when would be the best time to plant, any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Jim, What is your soil like?, (Pinot Noir like chalky soil) vines in general need to be planted out about 2 metres apart and 2 metres between rows to allow enough sun at the fruit, align rows east to west so they get full days sun on both sides.
dont allow them to get any higher  than 6'-0" or the shadow will cover next row.
Personally l didnt find Pinot Noir that great (didnt mature to ripeness) but muscat, Schonburger & Huxelrebe are good for me.
l love Red wine but you cannot get the ripeness on the fruit to produce a great wine.
Are you planning to use Pinot Noir as a Red or White wine?

If i'm honest not thinking that far ahead yet, just want to see if I can grow them. I always plant one experiment, last year it was melons and yes I got three decent size (and edible!!) ones off. So as I said will see if they grow first, then if I get any fruit and then finally what I will do with it.
