Not the best picture I'm afraid, about a third of the way up, theres a "join".
The mustard is just there for scale.

This topic has been started in response to many people asking if their eggs are normal or not. Please feel free to add your photos of extra large, small, odd shaped, wrinkled, wind eggs etc.
The first picture is off Dominic's hens egg and is perfectly normal :D

I got this egg this morning from one of my ex-bat girls
-
Another one for the odd-shaped egg thread/sticky. I think. As I understand it ex-batts can lay misshapen eggs when coming to the end of their laying cycle.
-
Confused with the pictures, are they all of the same egg?
-
yes, all the same egg but from different angles. straight down on one side with bumpy bits, and a 'wobbly' kind of top (but not soft- if that makes any sense at all ??? !)
She is just going into a moult- so nothing to really worry about I think :D :D
-
I was just looking at the thread about strange shaped eggs, which has the purpose of showing the wide variation there can be in egg shape and size. The idea is that there is lots of natural variation and there's not usually any need to worry.
So just for a change of pace I thought I might give you something to worry about. :tongue2: Here's a couple of links discussing something called "Egg Drop Syndrome." It was identified in Ireland in 1976 and is caused by a virus.
First, some photos of mis-shapen eggs:

Then, a description of the syndrome:

That's very interesting Lindeggs! Thanks for the links.

Thought one of the mods would like to put some more photos on the Strange Eggs thread.
Large blotchy egg is from my Bovan Goldline who loves laying soft shelled eggs. I put some kiln dried sand in a large tub for the hens to dustbathe in. They prefer to eat it and as a result Bossy Boots has laid this colourful egg.
The small round egg is a wind egg, again I think this is from Bossy Boots.
The small colourful egg is the first egg from the quail that was attacked by her brother. She is laying larger eggs now but her first was so small it probably is all yolk or all white.

Latest strange egg, ouch!

our chickens have offten layed eggs like that and we have be told that if the chickens are worried then they lay like that ?? How true it is I'm not sure.

Latest strange egg, ouch!
I've been told this is a difficult to lay egg - ie: the stretchmarks. Either the egg was too big or the hen wasn't quite ready but the egg was too big to keep inside.
I don't think it's a problem though - unless happening all the time I suppose.

One of my chickens has been laying strange eggs for the past two months, prior to this she laid perfectly normal eggs. Her egg production has not changed just the physical appearance of the eggs. I have two chickens in total and the other chicken is laying normal eggs. Every egg for the past couple of months has had varying degrees of warping. The shells are a normal thickness and the insides are also normal. Anyone have any ideas?
-
We found we got a couple of eggs with no shell this cold weather. They were just a membrane. Only a couple though and now things are back to normal.

I'm no chicken expert, but these all look like dietary issues. We had a few weird eggs so we made sure we upped their calcium intake and a more balanced fruit/veg/grain diet and they're all good now.
We bake the used egg shells then crush them into tiny fragments and then feed them back to the girls a pinch every now and then.
Also, when making hard-boiled eggs, give the boiled water to them to drink (once cooled), it has loads of calcium in it.
-
The hen of mine that lays soft shelled or weird shaped has the same to eat as all the others. Good quality layers pellets, some freeranging and a tiny amount on mixed corn. Crushed oyster shell and grit is always available for them. I really think that it is her breeding that the problem lies, she is a Bovan Goldline and was bred to lay the optimum number of eggs. If she was on commercial premises she would have had the chop by now. ;)

It was only strange today because it was massive!
One of the 5 eggs I picked up this morning was twice the size of the other 4!! 8)
That must have smarted!
-
That's why eggs are not square :D

Bought 3 new POL girls at the weekend. 2 laid perfect eggs on their 2nd day home but the 3rd one was obviously trying to get the hang of it, this is her first egg. When I broke it open there was a yolk and what looked like part of an intestine about 3 ins long. She's been laying proper ones since then, but it did turn my stomach a bit seeing the contents of this odd one.

wind egg laid today by one of my girls.

I had 2 pointy eggs yesterday.
Normally our girls lay lil' chubby eggs, pointed at one end (normal, effectively) but these are long and pointy??
And the darker coloured one is a biggie :D
???
-
thats a great tip about the water and calcium, i am definitely going to try that when i get my new hens :D

This website has been brill for us (we have ex batts too)
Gives a full list of all problems/ causes.
Hope this helps!!!

good link there, although a lot of the misshaped/soft shelled/shell less eggs can also be due to the hen at the end of it's laying cycles where it's stock of calcium has been depleted :)
-
here is a photo of a wind egg (aka fart egg, witches egg, practise egg) alongside a normal egg laid by the same hen, as you can see it has a greater concentration of colour pigmentation.
-
I sometimes get strange eggs from my chickens. I found it can vary depending on the weather and diet. It's also important that they have enough space to roam, if they are too close together some chickens can become stressed.

Hello readers,
This evening, about 8pm I went to usher my three chickens from the garden (free ranging) and put them into the cage before tucking them up in bed in the coop.
So what! But one hen was reluctant to come and kept slowly walking away from me.
I eventually caught her and put her in the cage, soon after, she laid an egg with a very thin shell like jelly.
The other two hens went to it so I removed it.
Now the question is why lay another egg, as she laid an egg this morning about 8am?
So why another one in 12-13 hours? Will she lay again as usual tomorrow morning?
I do go on a bit.
Tom Parrot.
-
Just a note. My chicken did lay another perfect egg the following morning about 8:30.
All is well since then. Guess just a blip.
-
I'm glad to hear she is OK Tom :)
I don't know what caused the odd jelly shelled egg, but it seems it was a blip and all is well. They do like to keep us guessing don't they :)
