John's 'Extra' newsletter of 21st june reminds us to net our fruit with a story from his younger years about putting off netting till the morning.
I was sent as a kid to a boarding school near Edinburgh that had a walled garden that must have been fully 2 acres in size - half was vegetables and half in the summer had a tennis court and croquet lawn, but also cherry trees espaliered onto the walls. The school treat was when these ripened and were served up towards the end of the summer term. That is not say however that those who had access for tennis and croquet hadn't already had a sampling!!
