Pine needles as mulch?
« on: June 12, 2008, 11:02 »
I need to clear out the 'shed' in our yard at home...it's not a proper shed shed but an outbuilding filled with all our junk! We still have last year's Christmas tree in there, and I was wondering if I can strip the needles off it (they still haven't fallen off yet!) and use them (not the wood) to mulch?

I remember reading on here somewhere that pine is acidic so not good, but that was in the context of using woodchip from tree surgeons etc, so would include the branches and trunk as well as just the needles.

So, just wondering if anyone does this, or has done it and would recommend it (or not)?

Thanks folks!
Sal

Organic...so far!

would there be enough needles to make it worthwhile? i have a large source of pine wood at hand and think it would make an ideal path. i have some garden lime which i might pop down first to counter the acidity. seems like a plan.

They are acidic and so are generally recommended for the likes of blueberries which need an ericaceous soil.

I have been wondering where to get an acidic mulch for my blueberries so maybe they will have to wait until 12th night for their treat!
Try to be organic ...sort of ...most of the time ...
