Title: Ericaceous compost
Post by: Adie J on October 03, 2011, 16:07
I have been given 8 bags of Ericaceous compost and wondered wether I could spread it on my allotment for next years vegetables. Would it do any harm? or any good for that matter. Thanks for taking a look.

Welcome to the site  :D

Ericaceous compost is acidic rather than neutral.  Does your plot need to be made more acidic?  Also, do you have any blueberries?

Some plants dislike acid soil (e.g. brassicas) so you'd need to be careful where you applied it and what you grew in the next couple of years in that spot.

Alternatively, if you have plants at home such as camellia, rhododendron, pieris, use it to mulch them.

...and as well as some plants you want NOT liking acid, some weeds like horsetails and nettles prefer more acid soil...

It also depends how big your plot is, and so how much you will use per square metre.
