Can i grow sweet peas in a shallow container(about 4or5 inches deep),or do they need deep soil?

You could try dwarf sweet peas, but the regular vining ones need deep trenches for their roots to do well.

I bought two pots of Sweet Pea seedlings from Wyevale yesterday. Plants were about 4" tall, and cost £1.49 each.  I pricked out 47 plants ... and the seeds, for that variety, are £2.49 from Unwins for 20 seeds!!

I'm hoping it will give me a flying start, compared to sowing seed now

Right,another question.Would a very slim but wide container work,aslong as it had adequate depth,say a container 12inches wide by 3 or 4 inches deep and and 12-15 inches high?I'm thinking of making a container to fit in the spaces along the top of a pallet fence,if you know what i mean.

 Probably just enough space for soil for obe or two plants, especially dwarf, but the timber may have chemical treatment and wood takes nitrogen from the soil...

I'd say to give it a try - so long as there's plenty of water and food, they should be fine (you *can* grow them in much smaller containers than the ideal so long as you feed and water religiously).  You may find yourself watering twice daily in a really bad drought, but I'd say that sweet peas are one of the few plants worth it!  Personally, I'd only plant them one deep, and space them a bit wider than normal.  Lining the container with plastic (old compost bags are good) will help with water retention and also stop any preservatives leaching into the soil.
