Celery
« on: June 29, 2011, 14:41 »
This year we are growing celery for the first time.    I started it off in the allotment and it has been hardening off for about 10 days now (we were going to put it in at the weekend but it was far too hot to spend much time doing anything).

I am intending on getting it in the plot tomorrow.

The plants now range from about 6 inches high to about 3 inches high.  They are self blanching although I can't remember the actual variety off the top of my head.

Does anyone have any tips on successfully growing celery please.
I always find that work gets in the way of life.

Water it.

Then water it again.

After that, water it.

Then some.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Tie some soft string loosely round the middle to stop soil getting in there.   (kicked up by all this watering)!  :tongue2:   Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

What DD is trying to say is that celery is really a bog plant. If you keep that in mind, you'll know that it really does need a lot of frequent watering.   ;)

Thanks for that.    I will make sure that it is well watered then.

On the bright side, nothing else needs doing to it. If it goes dry though it shall be stringy and bolts. The leaves still will be good for flavouring though. ;)

I'm trying mine in one of those plastic builder's trugs - I've drilled a couple of holes in the bottom for a bit of drainage (but not much), without the usual 2 inches of gravel I normally put in tubs - this seems to be keeping the soil nice and moist. If yours are in the ground, water heavily then mulch heavily with compost if you have some.
