Asparagus Pea Q?
« on: June 27, 2011, 17:56 »
I have a fine run of plants and they have just started to flower-methinks it will look bootiful when they all blossom 8).
I have never grown these before and the pics. I can access are a bit vague as what is the edible morsel, and when does it arrive.
Does a seed pod develop behind the flower and that`s the bit you eat or what...???doh  :D

The seed pods develop behind the flower as with peas, beans etc, It is not a flat pod, but has three crinkly edges. Make sure you pick them very young, no more than 2-3cms long otherwise they get tough and stringy. Boil or steam and serve with butter  yummy.

I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

:Dthanks

They are absolutely tasteless mind, quite like corguettes. Always grow well for a filler, that nobody likes.

Quite a dry flavour, and as Nikki says, don't bother if they're longer than an inch or so.

The flowers are beautiful!

Tried them last year, not impressed. I think the space is better used for mangetout or sugar snap.

I agree Bernard. Tasted like wood, texture like cardboard and just a handful of small pods to show for it!
Where's the asparagus, then?

Sorry, Sir, I really thought grass was the real flavour here.
