Quail chick not doing too well
« on: June 13, 2012, 09:57 »
I've got 14  3 week old quail chicks in the brooder but have been off heat for a while.

They are all doing really well and not far off full grown. I'm waiting for the weather to improve and they can go out into the quail house

On dry, warm days i have been putting the brooder outstide which i have done this morning. They were all running around as normal.

I went out to check on them 15 minutes later and 1 was laying prone on the brooder floor, being trampled on and eyes shut. I picked it up and its really cold and lifeless. I've brought it indoors to put under a heat lamp. Whilst seting up the box it started to gasp for air.
I've dipped its beak in water and put it under the lamp, theres not really anything else i can do for it but wait to see if it picks up.

Theres no sign of injury or illness, i think probably what has happened is it's took flight and hit the mesh screen on top of the brooder and is in shock.
I'm glad i went out when i did because i dont think it would have lasted very long.

Quail chicks can be really delicate and yes, flying up and banging themselves on the roof can be a really problem. Hopefully whatever caused it it will pick up soon. I find that adding a little honey to the water can also give them a boost.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Thanks, unfortunately it didnt make it. It seemed to perk up for a couple of hours and then had a seizure of some sort.

I have replaced the mesh cover with debris netting clipped around securely so if they do take flight it wont be as traumatic. They should be in the quail house at the weekend where they can fly as much as they want.

I'll remember the honey for the next time (hopefully wont have a next time)

:(  Sorry about your quail chick.  The debris netting sounds a good idea.

Good luck with your quail house, don't forget some photos.   :)
