Hi all my first Silkie x light sussex hatched this morning and as yet the other 5 have still not started to chip their way out.

If you hold the eggs you can feel them inside moving around but i'm a little concerned that if the hatched chick finds it's feet and the mother hen follows the rest of the eggs/chicks will be left to perish.

How long does it usually take from hatching the first egg to last egg ?

it can be several days - leave them alone mum will bring them out to feed and drink in a few days

If you can feel them moving then Mum will be able to as well and she will wait for them to hatch.

I had this dilemma a week ago.  My first chick hatched out on Easter Monday and my second chick hatched out three days later.  They are noticeably different sizes but both doing well.

We now have 2 chicks hatched. 4 to go, so exciting

I share your excitement, we had 2 hatchings this morning.  I know from past experience that there can be a number of days between hatches so be patient.  Chooks are very good mums and generally know what’s best.

Well three out of the six have hatched, when i went to see them this morning they were all outside with mum who was busy showing them what to eat/drink. The other three eggs were in the nest and were cold, i cracked them open and they were all infertile.

I do believe that we have three boys too which is a little dissapointing but i suppose it's the luck of the draw




I do have another broody hen so i'm kind of battling with myself wether or not to get some more eggs under her ............
