Aubergine flowering, now what??
« on: June 25, 2013, 09:10 »
Last year I got to this stage with my aubergine plants and then the flowers just withered and no aubergines. Don't want the same thing to happen this year. They are being fed with tomato food, flowers have been misted. Anything else recommended? Varieties are Black Beauty and Snowy, if that makes a difference.

They need pollinating.  Easiest way (by hand) is to gently brush the inside of the flowers with a small soft brush.

I thought that the misting did that, but will go equipped with my blusher brush next trip!

How did your aubergines fair then?

I got a couple of fruits, then lost a lot of flowers to the GH floor. Discovered that giving the flowers a good tickle with my finger pollinated them, and I have more fruits on the way now.

Some of the large lower leaves are going yellow - do you think it would hurt to snip them off? There are plenty of other leaves.

I moved mine outside. Now have several fruits and plants look healthier for being in the sun and rain. Will do this next year too. Start them off in the poly and then move them.

My OH bought one half price in aldi, looking like it was on it's way out. It's been left out to get on with it, it dropped it's first flower but the next on left an aubergine behind it, have been feeding tom food. There are more flowers ready to open  :)
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how i keep from going under......

I grew some two years ago, half in the greenhouse and some outside in pots. The ones outside did much better and I put it down to the bees and hoverflies being better pollinators than me. Didn't bother last year as we sold the house, just as well with summer being such a washout.

Grow like weeds here.

I have 3 grafted plants and they have about 10 fruits becoming a good size currently

They were right about grafted plants it seems - plenty of vigor!!
The slugs are rather partial to the fruits so there is a lot of little blue pelletsof doom around the graft!

Feeding 2 times a week with Tom feed and oncewith a high nitrogen one
