Title: How do I identify this weed?

I have just taken over an allotment plot and I am just starting to dig it however a large amount of the plot is covered with grass and weeds.

I have taken a very poor picture of the most prolific weed on the plot and was wondering if anyone could point me somewhere that would help me identify it and more importantly, how to deal with it (before I make it worse :) ) .

I've got a bit of it, but it's easier to deal with than couch grass, (IMO). The roots are a bit tenacious, but are quite shallow.

best way to get rid of creeping buttercups , in late spring when at its most prolific give it a dose of round up , when it reappears give it another dose of round up , till will not come back

Means your soil has a tendency to dampness, double dig that area will help cure, add plenty of organic matter as you dig  :wink:

I have that too, and was wondering what it was and what to do with it - now I know - round up!!

Personally, as Roundup is ineffective at this time of year, if the weather was suitable, I'd be out there digging them up, rather then looking at them & waiting for them to start growing again.

I know that (honest I did!)...I'm just creating a contingency plan for the bits that I miss, for when they start appearing all over the shop in the spring time!!
I'm a great believer in contingency plans...and round up!! :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

I've started digging out the dreaded Japanese knotweed roots....

Slow process but at least i'll get a lot of it out before next season.

Then I'm going to use Roundup tree stump and root killer on it aswell as the brambles that i miss.

Going to burn the roots on a real hot fire when i get some more of it out.

At least it won't come back as prolific then.  :)

DD.'s right people, don't waste your money on round-up this time of year, the weeds need to be "actively growing" for it too work
