Title: How many potatoes to plant?
Post by: Sharonx on April 02, 2009, 13:14
Hi,
Am hoping to get the seed potatoes in this weekend, but now wondering if I have too many. I have :-
12 Charlotte
21 Nicola
16 Rooster
40 Maris piper

There is only 3 of us in the family, and as I'm not sure what yeild I would get from one seed potato I want some advice. I don't want to use space unnecessarily.
Thanks

each year, the yield from the same number of seed potatoes changes.  You might end up with lots of little ones (so would use more) and other times, some large ones.  Some varieties may get more slug or wireworm damage than others, so you might have a few potatoes to discard as well.  At a guess I'd say your selection & quantities are about right, might even be just a little on the small side.

Ok, thanks for that. I will plant them all then and see what I get. I know they take up alot of space so that's fine if they are going to eaten and hopefully, I won't loose too many! :)
